The Wismar Market Square, with its area of 10,000 square meters, is one of the largest market squares in Northern Germany. Historical buildings surround the square. The most dominant building is the town hall on the north side of the market square. The neoclassical building was built according to the plans of the court architect of Ludwigslust, Johann Georg Barca, from 1817 to 1819, after the original late Gothic town hall had collapsed in 1807. The cross-ribbed vault in the cellar of the town hall dates back to the 13th century.
Gable houses from different epochs frame the market square. Directly on the market square is one of the landmarks of the city of Wismar: The Wasserkunst.
