Description

Adjacent to the park of the Old Hunting Castle is the historic riding hall. Under the leadership of the Wermsdorf architect Richard Liebers, construction began in 1932 and was completed in 1934. The natural stone base made from slabs of the Wermsdorf quarry, combined with the unusual form of the roof truss design (tail binder beam technique), gives the riding hall its special appearance. With the wide, pillar-free roof spanning more than 10 meters, the technology of the "tail binder beam roof" from the late 18th century was rediscovered and perfectly advanced at that time. After completion in 1934, the Saxon Riding and Driving School, housed in the Old Hunting Castle, used the building. In 1945, the Riding and Driving School dissolved. Thereafter, the hall served various purposes. Today, it is used solely for therapeutic riding. The historic riding hall in Wermsdorf is not only a symbol of the passion for horses and riding deeply rooted in the community, but also an impressive example of 1930s architecture. A visit to this extraordinary monument is a must for those interested in history and architecture.
