Description

Continue strolling up Castle Street, where many historical buildings stand. Castle Street was one of the most important streets in the town and also served as a link between the two castles. Through a gatehouse - the "Wermsdorf Gate" or "Smithy Gate" - you enter the baroque complex of Hubertusburg Castle. This building housed the smithy, and the flanking buildings were stables for up to 240 horses. Ramps, which were later demolished, led to the stables. On the ground floor, the coaches and hunting wagons were stored. The door linings with a basket-arched finish still indicate this purpose. Behind the western horse stable (today´s cultural hall), a full-story ramp also led to the riding arenas (now a car park). Here, jousting and other equestrian games were enjoyed. This H-shaped building complex, which encloses the so-called "Smithy Yard", and the hunters´ courtyard, which is laid out in the same floor plan, date, albeit functionally greatly altered, from the first construction period 1721 - 1733 under the direction of the architect J. C. Naumann. Through the next archway, you will reach the large castle courtyard.
