Beschreibung
At the end of the 15th century, the construction of a new parish church began, which was consecrated on 11 October 1502 by the then auxiliary bishop of Augsburg, Johann. From the previous building, only the Romanesque tower and parts of the masonry were retained in the new building.Stylistic elements from the Gothic period are the ribbed vault in the choir room of the church with eight partially framed and colourfully framed high-relief console figures made of sandstone. Most of them become the circle of the 14 emergency helpers counted. There are busts of St. Vitus (the patron saint of the church), Urban, Catherine, Christophorus, Pantaleon, Leonhard, Sebastian and Anthony. In the cathedral church, only reproductions of the historic altar wings from the workshop of the Memmingen artist family Striegel can be admired today. Today, the originals can only be seen in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. To the National Gallery The magnificent late Gothic winged altar came to the Hungarian capital when it no longer corresponded to the artistic taste of the time and was unceremoniously "sold" by the priest. When closed, the altar wings depict the death of Mary.On the left wing, John the Evangelist and the Doctors of the Church Augustine and Pope Gregory the Great can be seen. The open right wing depicts John the Baptist surrounded by Saints Florian and Sebastian.
