Description

Since the construction of the school building on the boundary between Vöhringen and Senden over 40 years ago, the Illertal Gymnasium has become an integral part of Illerzell, particularly shaping the northern part of the Vöhringen district. For thousands of young people, Illerzell has become a significant part of their biography, through the school years they experienced there, although they never predominantly lived there. The journey to the successful Illertal Gymnasium Vöhringen (IGV) of today was a difficult process, as is often repeated in a democracy. After years of school disputes between the cities of Senden and Vöhringen - both wanted to establish a grammar school in their city - an agreement was reached in 1978/79 to construct a joint grammar school between Senden and Vöhringen, on the northern border of the Vöhringen district of Illerzell. By 1980, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new building had taken place, and a topping-out ceremony was celebrated in October 1981. At the start of the 1982/83 school year, 575 students in 19 classes moved into the new building. In February 2007, a new building in the north of the school housing a cafeteria operation with a multifunctional kitchen was opened. In the years 2013/14, the entire school complex was expanded and modernized. The school complex has been integrated into the community life of the village from the very beginning. In the absence of a village inn, village evenings, concerts and theater performances were held in the school´s auditorium in the eighties. In the nineties, the traditional costume band of Illerzell organized their annual Father´s Day Festival in the schoolyard. The Illerzell sports club uses the double gymnasium several evenings a week and the two football fields west of the school are used jointly by the school and the sports club.
