The tithe barn and parish barn were the only barns within the city walls.
The tithe barn is a solid building attached to the city wall. In the interior of the tithe barn you can see the original late Gothic roof truss. A testimony to local history and a rare example of late Gothic carpentry. Examination of the beams suggests that it was built in 1526. During the French Revolution, tithe rights, originally a levy of crops to the landlord, were abolished and replaced by other taxes. The tithe was a kind of "tax", the citizen had to give up the 10th part of his income. In the district of Herrstein, the recipients were the Sponheim government and the pastors. For several decades, the property has been owned by the Becker family, who run a café and restaurant here.
