This fountain with its relief depictions of the winegrower's annual work and the small figure crowning it is a reminder of the builder of today's St Michael's Church, Reverend Johannes Hau, who worked here as a pastor from 1765 to 1803. The people of Piesport owe him a great deal: not only did he make this baroque gem possible for the village, but he is also considered a pioneer in the cultivation of Riesling grapes on the Moselle.
A good two decades before (!) the last Elector of Trier, Clemens Wenzelslaus, decreed the cultivation of Riesling for the entire Moselle, Pastor Hau succeeded in convincing his Piesport neighbours to plant only Riesling vines that were ideally suited to their slate-rich soil. Not least because of this, the designation of origin "Piesporter" was for a long time synonymous with high-quality Riesling wine. Hau himself sold selected cuttings from his parish vineyard to many places along the Moselle, making a major contribution to the spread of Riesling.
