The parish priest of Piesport St Martin, Johannes Adamus Lonviec, had the chapel built in 1682. He chose the location very deliberately. In Christian times, the chapel was to become the successor to the former Celtic-Romanesque place of worship. It had been known since the 17th century and was documented by several finds. It was a shrine to the Celtic deity Rosmerta and later to the Roman god of trade, Mercury. A total of five consecration inscriptions are known from here. Remains of walls have also been uncovered at various times. It is therefore reasonable to assume that small buildings stood here on the "Zimmethöhe", which can be interpreted in connection with a temple as a pilgrimage and hostel site, which also included stables and barns.
