Ferreser Kapelle

Beschreibung

According to legend, a wooden cross is said to have been driven near Ferres. It would miraculously circle in one place at high tide. This inexplicable process was interpreted as a sign from God to build a chapel on the shore. The oldest mention of it dates back to the 17th century. The valuable wooden cross with the almost life-size Christ was first placed in the old chapel and later, after the new building in 1929, on the eastern outer wall. In 1960, it was moved to the tower of St Michael's parish church so that it would no longer be exposed to the elements. It can still be seen there today and is a focal point for every visitor to the church. Finally, a sculptor from Morbach made a sandstone cross for the outer wall of the chapel. The main focal point in the sacred interior is the relief of Christ in the winepress, a replica of the same motif in the Chapel of the Cross in Ediger on the Lower Moselle. The expressive sacred sculpture is proof of the extent to which the idea of viticulture has also found its way into the ecclesiastical sphere.
