Burg Oeding (Burgturm und Gewölbe 1371)

Beschreibung

The Oeding Castle, first mentioned in 1353, was rebuilt in 1371/72 by Johann von Gemen after Prince Bishop Florence had the castle destroyed in 1366. Johann von Gemen established a main castle with a forecourt and allowed the castle's freedom to be settled. This laid the foundation for the development of the town of Oeding. Throughout history, the "House of Oeding" frequently changed its owners, including the Lords of Keppel and lastly the Lords of Mulert. In 1674, Prince Bishop Bernard von Galen set up a mission station in the castle for the Catholics from the Dutch town of Winterswijk, which was replaced in 1765 by a separate church in the castle grounds. The castle was sold in 1839. In 1854, the moats and flooding around the town were filled in and the buildings, except for the castle tower and parts of the vault, were demolished. The castle tower from the 15th century, which is now the landmark of Oeding, was restored in 1979 and integrated into a new hotel building.
