Pfarrkirche St. Vitus (1507/1936) mit Orgel in Barocktradition (1838)

Beschreibung

With the separation from the original parish of Loen and simultaneous division of the county of Loen into North (today Stadtlohn) and South Loen, in the year 1231, an independent community with the name 'Südlohn' was created, along with its own St. Vitus parish. The three-nave parish church is an important example of the Münsterland type of late Gothic hall churches. Constructed in 1507 (North portal), it is however much older at its core and presumably developed from a chapel in 1231 during its elevation to an independent parish. In 1936, the church was expanded and the late Romanesque tower was demolished and replaced by a new one. The church interior features remnants of a baroque decor. The late Gothic ceiling frescoes (circa 1510) with figurative representations and scroll decorations were only rediscovered in 1961 and are the most significant and extensive in the Münsterland. The late classical organ in the Baroque tradition (1838) is among the few fully preserved and playable historical facilities in Borken district.Visiting: freely accessible daily.
