No matter which direction you approach Köthen from, you cannot miss the twin towers of the town and cathedral church of St Jakob. They are the town´s landmark. The late Gothic hall church, whose foundation stone was laid in 1400, has a neo-Gothic interior dating from 1866 -1869. The statue of the church´s patron saint from the first half of the 12th century, the oldest work of art in Köthen, can be found in the south entrance. The Ladegast organ from 1872, which has been preserved almost in its original state, is famous. The princely crypt houses the almost complete burial place of the princely house of Anhalt-Köthen. From May to October and on public holidays, services are held in the church for the St. Jacob´s congregation. It is also the venue for numerous church music performances.www.jakobskirche-koethen.de
