The Goethe and Schiller Archive in Weimar is the oldest literary archive in Germany. The archive preserves more than 150 estates of writers, scholars, philosophers, composers, and visual artists, 14 archives of publishers, associations, and literary societies (including the Goethe Society, Insel Verlag Leipzig, the German Schiller Foundation, and the General German Music Association), as well as individual manuscripts from about 3,000 personalities from the end of the 13th to the beginning of the 21st century. They comprehensively represent, with a focus on the 18th and 19th centuries, German-language literature as well as music, visual arts, and science.
Goethe´s estate was included in the UNESCO Memory of the World documentary heritage in 2001.
