In the Steinbach district, which has been part of Lohr since 1972, a small Jewish community emerged in the 18th century under the protection of the Imperial Barons of Hutten zum Stolzenberg. The Jewish families lived in the so-called "Judenhof" on a rental base. It is located at the beginning of Eichhornstraße, which leads towards Mariabuchen. The former synagogue or "prayer room" was located in the house at Eichhornstraße 5b on the first floor. It still had the semi-circular windows typical of synagogues (see the photo). The building, now used as a residential house, no longer reveals anything of its former sacred use.
For 40 years, from 1848 until his death on November 22, 1888, Lazarus Eisemann served as the teacher, prayer leader, and ritual slaughterer (shochet), being the soul of the small community. With his passing, the days of the community were numbered. In 1896, the last Jewish family living in Steinbach was incorporated into the Jewish community in Lohr.
