In the "Israelite Pavilion," located on the ground floor, the ritual (kosher) kitchen for around 20 Jewish patients of the former psychiatric and nursing facility, now the BKH, was operated from 1924 to 1938. In local parlance in Lohr, it was called the "Juddeküch." Until her death in 1938, Sara, the wife of Simon Strauss, managed the kitchen voluntarily. During the Reichspogromnacht, the kitchen equipment was destroyed, and the kosher food supplies rendered unusable. The institution was supported by the "Welfare Association for Israelite Mental Patients e.V." based in Aschaffenburg. It was the only association of its kind in the German Reich. In 1939, under the pressure of forced "Aryanization," the welfare association had to sell the house, which it had built with great financial sacrifices from its members, for a fraction of its value. The joint unveiling of the plaque by District President Erwin Dotzel and Mayor Dr. Mario Paul took place on September 12, 2019, in memory of this beneficial institution.
