Altes Rathaus

Beschreibung

The centerpiece of the old town is the Old Town Hall, which Michael Imkeller built in the Renaissance style from 1599 to 1602 on behalf of the city magistrate.
Around 1600, Lohr was a very significant city, and accordingly, the town hall should be representative and stately. Even today, large entrance arches can be seen on the four sides of the building, through which a rider could enter the former open market hall without dismounting. The markets held in the Old Town Hall in the 17th century were enormously important for the economic development of the city of Lohr. The impressive portals bear the coats of arms of former councilors or mayors from days gone by.
Masonry Art on the Facade
Another special feature of the building is the numerous grotesques, heads, and Caryatids that the stonemasons have placed around the house. In total, 21 different stonemason signs can be found on the old town hall. Another indication that the building was of great importance. Also striking is the hexagonal roof tower with the golden Justitia.
From Market Hall to Cultural Venue
At the beginning of the 19th century, the open hall was converted into an enclosed space. Today, it houses an event space for the city of Lohr, where exhibitions, readings, or concerts often take place. The upper floors now accommodate the city library and the offices of the municipal singing and music school. The city administration moved to the New Town Hall on Schlossplatz in 1985.
