[127] Bayers Tower

Description

The most stunning view of the old fisherman's quarter is enjoyed by those who climb the 140 steps of the town tower.
The Bayer Tower dates back to the 13th/14th century, standing 40 meters tall, and was part of the town's fortifications. Its distinctive features include the large corner stones and the baroque spire of the structure. The imposing tower stands at the exit of the fisherman's quarter, at the corner of Fischergasse/Turmstraße. The town tower is the last one remaining from the former town fortifications. Another large town tower, a gate tower, stood at the location of the present-day Lohr police building.
The well-preserved Bayer Tower has six floors, with the top two floors serving as living quarters for the tower keeper, his entire family, and their livestock (!). The tower keeper's important task was to keep watch day and night and to warn the population in time of fire or other dangers.
Where the Bayer Tower got its name...
For over 200 years, a family named "Bayer" performed the tower keeper's duty. And so, the tower is also known as the "Bayer Tower" among the locals. In 1979, the Bayer Tower Association installed the staircase with the proceeds from its Bayer Tower festivals, allowing visitors to comfortably climb to the top today. In the topmost floor, the aforementioned tower keeper's dwelling can be visited. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a magnificent view over the Main River, the town, and into the Spessart forest through the tower's tiny windows.
Open to visitors from Easter to October (Saturday, Sunday, and every public holiday from 10 am to 12 pm). Guided tours can be booked through the tourist information at any time.
