[1303] Stone House

Description

The Stone House is located near the old Rechtenbacher Landstraße, which leads as a high road over the Schanzkopf.
Huge sandstone rocks and slabs lie shifted against each other, forming a large interior space. The room-like hollow provides space for about 20 people. Engravings and carvings can be seen on the ochre-colored walls. The oldest engraving dates back to 1760. Ashes and charred wood remnants indicate that people have repeatedly used the space.
How the Stone House came to be is not fully understood. It is a random result of nature. Tectonic movements in the earth's crust and weather-related processes are likely to have contributed. Because all usable sandstone slabs have apparently been removed from around the Stone House, it is suspected that previous generations preserved this natural cave as a shelter for forest workers, hikers, berry pickers, hunters, and foresters. Surely, this space was also a refuge in times of war and crisis.
In the "Lohrer Anzeiger" (newspaper) of June 1, 1917, it was reported that Kaspar Vater, who died at the age of 84, had herded pigs all his life. As a child, he lived with his parents in the Stone House. His father practiced the cobbling trade. They lived below the poverty line.
