[1307] Nature reserve Romberg

Description

The Romberg is a former meander of the Main River and is geologically located in the middle Buntsandstein (Lower Triassic sandstone). A meander is essentially an island in a broad river valley. The Main River flowed at a level 40 meters higher than it does today around 200,000 years ago. It was stopped by a gigantic barrier of stones, causing the river to flow around the Romberg.
The climate is of particular importance for the flora and fauna. The Romberg is considered a pronounced warm island in the sun-drenched Main Valley.
The nature reserve consists of numerous, mostly very small parcels of land, as is common in many places due to the Franconian real division of property. Consequently, the use of the Romberg has always been diverse. Hay meadows and pastures, fields and orchards, sand pits and vineyards used to coexist closely. The wetland "Stadlersee" located west of the Romberg is also part of the nature reserve.
The area is excellent for shorter hikes. The Spessartweg 1 trail leads directly through the Romberg nature reserve.
