[135] Valentinus Chapel

Description

The Valentinus Chapel was built between 1660 and 1665 on the site of a previous chapel. It is also called the Plague Chapel and is dedicated to Saint Valentinus, Sebastian, and Rochus.
Even back then, it was customary for members of the parish to pilgrimage from the parish church of St. Michael to Valentinusberg on certain feast days, such as the feast days of Saints Mark and Valentinus.
The origin of the chapel is attributed to the plague that ravaged the city in 1632, claiming the lives of 860 people in a short period. Fearing another outbreak of the plague in 1666, the people of Lohr vowed to annually pilgrimage to the mountain on August 16 in honor of Saint Rochus if the city were spared from a new epidemic.
The Feast of Saint Rochus is still observed locally today. Although the number of participants has decreased, the annual procession continues to take place.
