Halsbach spans 698 hectares today. It was first mentioned in a deed of pledge by the Lords of Rieneck in 1318. The nearby Schönrain Castle (now in ruins) was founded as a monastery by Benedictine monks in 1080. In the 16th century, it was sold to the Lords of Rieneck and served as the widow's seat for the last Countess of Rieneck until 1574.
The district is nestled in a hollow on the Franconian Plateau, a high plateau. The hiking trail to the ruins of Schönrain Castle is worthwhile not only for the magnificent view of the Main Valley from the ruins but also because of the scenic route. On the left towards Lohr is the nature reserve "Gray Heron Colony at Salzberg".
