Here they are standing on a square with a typical location-specific name. Hankel is the derisive name for the inhabitants of Herrstein. It is a derivation of the frequently used first name Johann Karl. This name describes a self-confident, educated but also somewhat conceited citizen.
Scenically, the fountain depicts the following:
A Hankel goes to the well to drink water. He carries a hat and an umbrella in his hands. Behind the fountain is a boy who wants to annoy Hankel.
The boy closes the well spout and splashes the hankel wet. Now Hankel grabs his umbrella and threatens the boy, cursing.
From here you have a direct view of the parish barn.
The meadow area at the Hankelbrunnen is used 1st time a year for an open-air concert of the music series "Gemstone Serenade".
The wall that borders the square to the west is a part of the city wall restored on the original foundations.
