Beschreibung

The Clock Tower is the only surviving medieval city gate in the area of the Upper Nahe. It is the landmark of the place. Dendrochronological investigations suggest that it was built in 1448/49.
The Gothic slate building with the characteristic steep roof owes its preservation to the fact that Herrstein never had a church towThe clock dates back to 1838. It is the work of the Schiffmann company from Mülheim/Mosel and only shows the full hours. The 1/4 hour are each rung with different numbers of sounds.
Until 1967, the bell also served as a school bell. It was rung by the longest-serving students and urged them to go to school on time.
The battlement in the clock tower was faithfully reconstructed as part of the restoration work in the centre of Herrstein and is part of the town of Herrstein. Here hung the only larger bell of the congregation, which was needed as a storm bell.
