The church emerged from the old castle chapel. The chancel is built in the Gothic style. It formed a unit with the central part of the church. There used to be a structural connection to the castle here. It was sufficient as a place of worship for the castle garrison and a covered corridor led to the castle houses. However, the church served as a place of worship not only for the inhabitants of the castle, but also for the people of the settlement.
Therefore, several extensions were required. The roof of the central part of the church dates back to 1437. The choir is somewhat younger, with dendrochronological data showing that it was built in 1480. The front part was built in 1766.
In the choir room there are several graves of members of the local bailiff and pastor families under the floor. The tombstones were placed on the walls after the restoration.
The organ is the work of the famous Stumm family of organ builders from Rhaunen-Sulzbach.
It dates back to 1776. In around 180 years, the Stumm family business has created more than 300 organs in 6 generations. 11 of these masterpieces can still be admired in the area of the German Gemstone Route. The organ was thoroughly restored in 1998 and brought back to its original condition as closely as possible.
Earlier modifications and the replacement of the register pipes with zinc pipes in 1917 were eliminated. Since this restoration, the organ has also been equipped with all the intended stops.
Inside the church, on the gallery, there are images of Jesus, evangelists and prophets.
Age and painter, he immortalized himself in the image of the prophet Luke, which the brush and palette indicate, are unknown. These were discovered by chance during the renovation of the church in 1959. A painter's apprentice had used a blackboard, which had become superfluous due to the conversion of the organ, as a working surface. In the process, paint stripping fluid had fallen over. A church restorer who was on site discovered a colorful layer under 4 layers of paint. The paintings were then uncovered by a church restorer over a long period of time. The church still hosts church services, weddings and baptisms.
