The existing ramparts today were formed at the beginning of the 19th century from the ruins of the former city fortifications. Initially, orchards and vegetable gardens were laid out here, and the cemeteries of the Nikolai and Marien churches were moved to the rampart, some old gravestones of which still bear witness. At the end of the 19th century, the ramparts were designed as a promenade with a double row of lime trees during urban expansions of the city and the closure of the cemeteries. From 2003 to 2007, the ramparts were monumentally renovated and included in the statewide Garden Dreams network. From the rampart promenade, which surrounds the old town like a green ring, there are charming views of the city's historic buildings and the moat. Also worth seeing are remnants of the city wall and the Salzwedeler gate, the best-preserved of the four former city gates.
