The Salzwedeler Gate is the only well-preserved of the four former city gates. It was built in the 16th century and was an important part of the city fortification system. The two powerful battery towers, which are attached to the gate, have diameters of 9 and 18 meters. In 1907, the gate was reconstructed by Prof. Dr. Otto Stiehl. For example, the step gable above the gate entrance was carefully remodeled after old patterns. From 1991, a general refurbishment was carried out and in 2013 the large bastion was extensively renovated. The gate can be visited, for example, during city tours after consultation with the tourist information office of the Hanseatic City of Gardelegen. Only remnants of the Magdeburg and Stendal Gates as well as the city wall have survived, and can be visited while walking along the ramparts. A part of the city moat is also still in existence, which, like the city wall and ramparts, was meant to protect against enemies in earlier times.
