A genuine piece of the Middle Ages from the 13th century can be found right next to the Salzwedel Gate. The Gate Mill - an inn, resting place, and accommodation - was one of the city's most important sources of income at the time and, until the end of the 19th century, it served as the go-to place for the surrounding villages to grind their grain.
