Dorfkirche Hemstedt

Beschreibung

Viewed from afar, the Hemstedter village church, built in 1832 with its elongated nave and the turret placed on the west side, resembles many other old churches of the Altmark region. Only upon closer inspection, the special features of the sacred building become apparent. For instance, the brick tower, which was subsequently placed on the fieldstone walls on the west side, has an octagonal tip. Additionally, the choir is semi-circular – a rarity in the region. The Hemstedter church is also a successor building, having been built on the foundation of a decayed Romanesque chapel. A kindly looking baptismal angel still reminds visitors of this today.
